Young Greens EGM 2021

ygegm graphic 2.png

The Executive Committee of the Young Greens - Óige Ghlas has called an EGM to take place on Saturday 24th April from 4pm - 6pm. The purpose of this EGM will be to fill a number of vacant positions on the committee which have become available due to resignations in the past few months.

More importantly, this may be an important turning point for the Young Greens and the young green movement here in Ireland. We understand that it has been a challenging few months for many members, with many people leaving the Young Greens and the Green Party. If you are still a member of the Green Party, the Young Greens or just identify as "green", we welcome you to attend the EGM.

The Young Greens have never been in a better situation to affect real change, however the Young Greens will need to exist in the next year and onwards. We need new people to get involved and to run for positions, and to bring some new energy to the Executive Committee. If you think you can be a part of this, we highly encourage you to attend.

We will also host a panel on the "Future of Young Activists in the Green Movement" (speakers tbc) and aim to do some icebreakers and networking throughout the event.

Open position on the Committee include the following;

  • Chairperson*

  • Branch Coordinator

  • Membership & Events Officer

  • Policy Coordinator

  • Regional representatives

    • Connacht

    • Ulster

  • Ordinary Committee Members

*Candidates for chairperson must have prior experience on the committee of a Young Greens member group or the National Committee of the Young Greens.

All roles are further explained in the Young Greens Constitution, attached here.

The Returning Officer will be announced shortly. Candidates may make themselves know to the Returning Officer, or run on the day. In the event that a position on the committee becomes available due to election of that Officer to another role, then that position will also be open for election on the day of the EGM too.

From Ireland to Brussels - Affecting Green change in Europe

97450165_10157682726509790_6249916193004584960_o.jpg

What actually happens in the EU? And how can we make a difference to it? Join us on Monday 18th May where we'll be joined by MEP for Ireland South Grace O'Sullivan for an intimate Q&A about life as an MEP, her getting used to the European Parliament and what her work entails now. We're aiming to answer questions about the EU, its constituent bodies, and how Young Greens in Ireland can input to make a change on European level.

Joining Grace will be members of her team in Brussels:

- Ed Davitt, a former Young Green and Head of Office for Grace O'Sullivan, who also has experience working for European environmental NGOs
- Jacqui Corcoran, working with Grace on communications, who will explore how we can understand and disseminate European initiatives and green values.

If you're interested in attending, please fill out the form below and we'll be in touch!

AGM of the Rural Young Greens - Óige Ghlas na Tuaithe

The inaugural AGM of the Rural Young Greens - Óige Ghlas na Tuaithe which will be taking place on Wednesday 6th May at 8pm via Google Hangouts. Please fill out the form below to register for the event.

Once you have registered, you will receive the agenda, the proposed constitution and hangouts link. If you have an interest in getting involved with the Rural Young Greens or running for committee, do come along! Here is the link to the Rural Young Greens Facebook group.

There has never been a more crucial time for rural Ireland to have a strong, clear voice in politics. Carbon emissions are rising, cities are sprawling and rural Ireland is being left behind by the nation’s politicians. Young people are leaving our towns and villages in droves. The lack of broadband remains a widespread issue, meaning that people are unable to work from home. They often commute long distances to work in large urban centres far from their homes. The lack of public transport is still a huge issue in most of the country.

Our farmers, the backbone of our nation, struggle to make a living while big corporations make huge profits. Rural suicide rates are skyrocketing and we continue to have shoddy access to essential services, with hospitals being located many miles from our homes. Rural Ireland and rural youth need a voice. Join us to be that voice as we move towards a greener, brighter future.

Looking for some sustainable new clothes? Perhaps have a few pieces in your wardrobe that are due a better life? Just plain sick of fast fashion companies trying to sell us new s**t we and the planet don't need? Well hello there... 😏

Join us in the Quad Room for this event in collaboration with Amnesty-International UCD, UCD Young Greens and UCD Hortsoc!
This is a bilingual event - embrace it! But please don't be discouraged. All are welcome!!

How it all goes down...

We have an informal "bring-one-take-one" policy on clothes (maximum three items per person) and we also accept donations to the chosen SU charities which this year are the Rape Crisis Network Ireland and Enable Ireland. If you don't have anything to give though fear not friend - we will certainly not turn you away and welcome anyone and everyone to come along to join our circular fashion fam! Preloved or new items of clothing of all styles, genders and size will be accepted (Bellbottoms. Button ups. Bodycons. Bring them on!) 🥳 Think rummaging through your friend's wardrobe for an outfit- except all of UCD is your friend! 🙌

Some general GUIDELINES in terms of what to bring:
- Only garments in wearable and clean condition will be accepted
- Accessories and footwear of high quality can also be submitted
- Underwear/tights/socks will not be accepted at this event
- Don't forget your sense of curiosity & that thrifty mindset!

Fast fashion is destroying our planet, violates human rights all over the world and pollutes our environment through its constant cycle of make, sell, consume. It's time for a new way for fashion. Let's rebel and show those greedy corporations we can look pretty fine whilst doing so ✊🌎

Young Greens UCD EGM

We’re holding an EGM quite late because of the elections, but we wanted to create some new roles so people can try them out for a few weeks before committing to them for the 20/21 academic year. We are creating between 4 positions and electing a new treasurer. Also some constitutional changes will be voted on, as described in our email. VEGAN PIZZA AFTERWARDS! Room in Newman : B109

The roles and what they entail are detailed below. We’ll also be planning events for the rest of the semester, and talking about campaigns that we’re involved in. If you haven’t gotten involved before now is a great time to do so.

Role 1 - Public Relations Officer (2): You and your co-officer will be in charge of managing the social media of the society. You’ll answer questions and relay them onto the Auditor/Secretary where needed. You’ll design graphics and post them on social media. You’ll also create Facebook events. This sounds like a lot, but you’ll be in a pair, and will be helped by the secretary and events officers.

Role 2 - Campaigns Officer (2): You and your co-officer will be in charge of coordinating the society’s involvement and response to campaigns happening on or off campus. You’ll attend meetings of these campaigns where possible and make sure the society is informed about upcoming campaign events.

Treasurer: The Treasurer is in charge with maintaining the society’s bank account and reporting on the financial status of the society to both the society and the finance committee. This is in association with the Senior Treasurer. (This role in particular is very important, and those wishing to apply for this role will be contacted directly)

Green Week Debate

The planet is dying. As coasts erode and temperatures rise, we can feel the ground beneath our feet screaming in pain. Activists tell us that this is not a drill - that if we do not act now, an extinction-level event will be upon us.

But what shape should this action take? Will the climate crisis be solved through collective efforts, or is it beholden on all of us to make the change we want to see? Where does culpability for this dire phenomenon lie - with the individual, or with society? Can we make change on our own, or do we need the structures of the world to fundamentally change before the environment can begin to heal?

In a very special event, the Hist partners with TCD Botanical Society, TCD Global Development Society, and TCD Young Greens for a sustainability debate on a crowd-sourced motion. This Green Week, join some of Trinity’s best student speakers, alongside contemporary political figures, as they unpick a question at the heart of our planet’s future.

And if that isn’t enough fun, join us as we venture out to Workman’s for afters! Discussing the death of everything we’ve ever known is always more fun in a nightclub.

The GMB. 7.30 PM. Wednesday the 19th of February. We’re all in this together.
