We as a collective would like to take this moment to speak out, to wholeheartedly and utterly condemn the barbaric act of violence that was committed against #GeorgeFloyd last week in Minneapolis. Mr. Floyd, like all too many before him, was yet another victim of systemic racism that has carried on for centuries. It’s long past time that we say ENOUGH! As a society, it is our duty to stand against this relentless tide of injustice and oppression in all its forms, that continues to this day. We as a society MUST do better. While the events of the past week have been focused around the deplorable acts committed by a system of oppressive power in the United States, we must remind ourselves that this deep-rooted problem of racism is not exclusive to any one country or society. Here in Ireland, over 6,000 individuals are currently living in horrific conditions, in Direct Provision. This inhumane system is run for profit, leading to residents being forced to share rooms with up to 8 strangers, often living in these centres for years. This has been described by the Special Rapporteur on Child Protection as “institutionalised poverty”. Young people living in these centres are more prone to depression and suicide. Like the Mother and Baby homes before it, this system is a national embarrassment, and cannot be allowed to continue as is. Regardless of where we are in the world, it is time for us to step up and call out the institutionalised racism and oppression that has curled its way into our own societies, choking them from within. We take this opportunity to call for the closure of Direct Provision centres, and for a more humane system to be implemented that is not run for profit on behalf of the State. Contact legislators, reach out to your local representatives, and let them know that we will not stand for the continuation of this system. Curious about Green Party Housing Policy? The Green Party believes that a safe and affordable home is every person's right. At a time when there are 10,000 people living in emergency accommodation in our country, it is imperative that the government take action and provide people with the opportunity to achieve that right. We have outlined some of the key points of our housing policy above. 1. The Green Party aims to see a massive programme of building public housing on public land. This would be implemented alongside the phasing out of subsidies to private landlords. 2. The Cost Rental Housing Model is a model in which tenants pay rent which covers the cost of constructing and maintaining the property. The government must review underused public land and build public housing where it can deliver most value. 3. The reform of Local Property Tax to a Site Value Tax would discourage land hoarding and encourages building on vacant land. The tax is levied on the value of the property under the land. 4. Strengthening governance in the area of renter's rights; Rent Review known as the "mirror rent", where rents for a given area are based off an official rent guide. This includes safeguards for landlords and tenants. 5. Deep retrofitting of public and private housing. Hundreds of millions are currently being spent on fuel poverty payments. Retrofitting will unlock a range of benefits, including increased comfort, reduced repair costs associated with damp, reduced health costs, increased property value, the creation of skilled jobs and locking-in reduced carbon emissions over the lifespan of the building.
